Don't get hung up on the name, we'll get to that in a minute. This is a smaller pack at approximately 17-20L, that's absolutely perfect for day-hikes, travel, daily use, or my favorite and what I'm using mine for--"Stumping" (the age old past-time of roving through the woods and shooting at stumps/pinecones/grass-clumps/etc. with your bow and arrow).
These packs are hand-made one at a time. Current lead-time is approximately 3 to 5 weeks for production.
DESIGN- The rolltop design provides the ability to load to maximum capacity, or roll down to minimum as needed, keeping contents safe and secure and as low-profile as possible.
Dimensions - Pack measures 12" wide x 5" deep x 17-22" tall (depending on rolled/expanded.
COLORS - Available in choice of Sapwood-Tan or Evergreen.
SIDES- Side mounted D-Rings allow for a multitude of attachments as needed, and doubled loops secure longer items like axes and hatchets, fishing rods, arrows, etc.
POCKETS - A cotton-lined closeable pocket measuring 9x13.5 internally, sits against your back when wearing the pack, and fits smaller sized laptops and most tablets. Behind that pocket is a second, open-topped pocket for longer items or anything which might require quick access.
INTERNALS - The main compartment of the pack is cotton-lined, and open and spacious, making it easy to find what you're looking for quickly. Many packs and bags on the market today include a zillion different pockets and compartments--and in my experience--lead to my rummaging endlessly for items that never end up back in the same place. The Philosopher Pack's large open space allows you to organize your things in smaller bags that are quickly removed and replaced with little thought.
ATTACHMENTS - Double strap loops are attached to the bottom of the pack to tie on bedrolls, tarps, etc. as-needed.
MATERIALS - The bag is constructed of 10oz Army Duck canvas with a water-repellent treatment that is not sticky or tacky. Leather is vegetable-tanned horsehide left raw for you to finish with your favorite leather treatment, or to let patina naturally. Hardware is antiqued-brass finished, and the straps are heavy-duty 1.5" cotton webbing.
NAME - As for the name, the idea of this pack was sparked by a request from my sister, who is currently progressing through a high-level philosophy program (I'm so proud of her!), and asked for a bag she could use on a daily basis for school and work, but also for international travel for an upcoming History-of-Philosophy oriented trip. A large component of her request was that the pack be "as pick-pocket-proof as possible"--hence the rolltop design, and semi-concealed spine pocket. This minimal design really appealed to me in that it keeps the pack simple and streamlined, which is great when moving through dense foliage. and tight spaces.
