Nowadays, they’re easy to miss—hidden in plain sight and no longer brought close by the roadways. Yet for years, travelers arriving in Bend on Highway 97 from the North or South were warmly greeted by what I affectionately called “The Bend Bushes.” Long before the Old Mill Rockchucks had their sward at the Old Mill, the grassy expanse before these iconic bushes was the regular spot to see our miniature meadow-grizzlies. You can still find the Northside bushes just south of the confluence of NE Division Street and Highway 97 (44.07709, -121.30463), while the Southside bushes, now overgrown and nearly unrecognizable, dwell down the slope just east of Exit 141 on Highway 97 (44.01609, -121.31803).
